Royal jelly is a product taken from the secretion of two
glands, which are originated in the pharinx of the bees
from three to twelve days of age. It is semifluid, whitish
- yellowish, acid, and with a phenolated smell. This "
Milk of bees " is the nourishment of every larvas during
the first three days of their life and it is the exclusive
food of the queen for all her life.
Thanks to this extraordinary food, queens live from four
to six years, and they put between one and three thousand
eggs daily. However, bees which are not fed with royal jelly
live from 40 to 120 days and their reproductive system is
very rudimentary. It can not be used for reproduction.
